How to Volunteer

EBCM Staff

Shar Etebar, Executive Director

Shar Etebar has been associated with all three of EBCM's root programs, BDRS, CFO, and Mediation Services in various capacities over the past 17 years.  Shar started at BDRS in 1990 as a volunteer where he was a mediator, trainer and board member-serving as Board President for two years.  In 1993, Shar became a staff Case Manager and later training coordinator for CFO, before moving over to BDRS as Program Director in 1998.  Shar also has served as an administrative hearing officer at Mediation Services since 2004.  Shar has served as Executive Director at East Bay Community Mediation for the past 3-1/2 years.

Shar has a B.A. in Peace and Conflicts Studies from U.C. Berkeley and J.D. from Golden Gate University Law School.  He also currently serves on the board of the Association for Dispute Resolution Service, Northern California (ADRNC).  Shar is bicultural with strong ties to both his Persian and "Southern" heritage.  His personal interests include travel, kayaking, camping and playing any and all types of games.

Jaimee Karroll, Director of Development & Marketing

For the past 20 years, Jaimee has been engaged in education, advocacy and fundraising aimed at ending violence.  As an educator and freelance writer she has received a number of awards.  She was a recipient of a scholarship to attend the 1995 Bennington College Summer Writing Program and in 1998 she was an invited writer-in-residence at the Temecula Arts Colony.  She holds an MBA in Liberal Studies from Mills College where she completed an interdisciplinary thesis on the role of song in social change movements.  In her capacity as a fundraiser, she has been convened a number of interdisciplinary educaitonal programs, chaired a legal defense committee organized to protect the first amendment rights of two prominent authors, and raised unrestricted funds for a number of Bay Area non-profit organizations.

In addition to her role at EBCM, she is also Chair of the Board of Directors of Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR) whre she is intimately involved in setting policy directed toward ensuring the logevity of the agency.

David Yusem, Community Mediation Program Mgr.

David Yusem was certified as a Community Mediator in 2000 by Conciliation Forums of Oakland (CFO).  He volunteered hundreds of hours as a mediator for CFO and Berkeley Dispute Resolution Service (BDRS).  David was trained as a Guardianship mediator by Conflict Resolution Programs (CRP) in Contra Costa County and subsequently mediated many Guardianship cases at the Family Law Center in Martinez.  In 2003, David became a board member of CFO and helped consolidate CFO and BDRS.  He served as Secretary of the Board of EBCM and later as the Vice President.  In December of 2004, David joined Mediation Services as the Staff Case Manager.  Within six months, he was the Program Manager.  His responsibilities included supervising all the case management, volunteers and hearing officers.  In July 2006, David stepped down from the board to become EBCM's Community Mediation Program Director.  He works 32 hours a week managing a fabulous group of Volunteer case managers, making sure the cases travel smoothly from initial intake through to mediation and follow-up.

David graduated from George Washington University with a B.A. in Philosophy.  He loves to play basketball and music, though not at the same time, and shoots lots of black and white film.

Nettie Pardue, Facilitation/Training Programs Mgr.

Nettie brings over a decade of experience as a facilitator, instructor, guide, trainer, and teacher.  She has worked with Outward Bound Wilderness and Professional, Adventure Associates, and the United World College using action learning to improve team and group performance and to facilitate deeper connections within individuals and the teams they belong.  Nettie is passionate about designing, developing, and delivering training curriculum and incorporating metaphors into those trainings.  Nettie received a M.A. in Applied Behavioral Science from Bastyr University/Leadership Institute of Seattle where she concentrated on coaching and consulting in organizations. 

Nettie hails from New Mexico and has lived in the Bay Area for three years.  She is enamored with the outdoors where she and her husband Jeff spend countless hours sea kayaking in the SF Bay, climbing, skiing and exploring the granite peaks of the Sierras.

Karen Haney-Owens, Court Mediation Program Mgr.

Karen Haney-Owens worked for many years as a city planner before being trained as a mediator.  She started at EBCM in early 2006 as a volunteer Case Manager, and became involved in the Courts Mediation Program when the agency was asked to provide mediators for both Small Claims and Civil Harassment Court in Hayward and Oakland.  She works with a group of dedicated volunteer mediators who enjoy the challenge of empowering individuals to solve their own disputes within the legal context.  She also implements a rent dispute resolution ordinance for the City of Fremont bringing landlords and tenants together to work out their issues.

Karen has a M.A. in City Planning from U.C. Berkeley.  She has two sons and a multi-cultural family, and has been an advocate for children with special needs on behalf of her youngest son.  She enjoys running, playing with her Arabian mare, and traveling.

Adrienne Murphy, Office Mgr.

Adrienne Murphy has been with our organization for 11 years.  She is formerly from New York and studied at Pratt Institute for 2 years and Katharine Gibbs Business School for 2 years.  Adrienne's background is in Bookkeeping/Accounting, Administrative Management.  She also served on the Advisory Board at her daughter, Dominique's school.  Adrienne is currently working toward obtaining her B.S. degree in Business/Accounting and Computer Science, with a minor in Business Administration.  Her personal interests include Modern & Hip-Hop dance and Arts & Crafts.  She is also a huge Basketball fan.   Adrienne also has her own Business called: Miz Murphy's Crafts, where she sells custom hand crafted wreath pictures frames and more!
